Project Description

Capacity improvements along SE Oralabor Road from east of Peachtree Dr to west of Creekview Dr, including the addition of turn lanes at SE Delaware Ave and the on/off ramps of I-35. 

Specifically, the proposed improvements include adding turn lanes, sidewalk improvements, and traffic signal upgrades along IA Hwy 160/SE Oralabor Road between SE Peachtree Drive and SE Creekview Drive, along SE Delaware Avenue at IA Hwy 160/SE Oralabor Road, and along the I-35 entrance and exit ramps at the IA Hwy 160/SE Oralabor Road interchange. The proposed roadway improvements include the following:

  • Two-way left turn lane (5 lane section) along IA Hwy 160/SE Oralabor Road from east of SE Peachtree Road to west of SE Hulsizer Road
  • IA Hwy 160/SE Oralabor Road & SE Hulsizer Avenue Intersection Improvements:
    • Left turn lanes for eastbound & westbound IA Hwy 160/SE Oralabor Road
    • Dedicated right turn lane for southbound SE Hulsizer Road
  • IA Hwy 160/SE Oralabor Road & SE Delaware Avenue Intersection Improvements:
    • Dual left turn lanes at each approach
    • Right turn lane for northbound SE Delaware Avenue
    • Dual right turn lanes for westbound IA Hwy 160/SE Oralabor Road
  • IA Hwy 160/SE Oralabor Road & Southbound I-35 Entrance and Exit Ramp Improvements:
    • Dual lanes for southbound I-35 entrance ramp
    • Dual right turn lanes for southbound I-35 exit ramp
    • Left turn lane for westbound IA Hwy 160/SE Oralabor Road
  • IA Hwy 160/SE Oralabor Road & Northbound I-35 Entrance and Exit Ramp Improvements:
    • Left turn lane for eastbound IA Hwy 160/SE Oralabor Road
    • Dual left turn lanes for northbound I-35 exit ramp
    • Dual right turn lanes for northbound I-35 exit ramp
    • Right turn lane for westbound SE Oralabor Road

General Traffic Impacts

Due to the nature of the project, construction work will be intermittent throughout the entire corridor until completion. Unless otherwise noted, construction impacting traffic lanes will occur overnight between 7 p.m. - 6 a.m., Sunday nights through Friday mornings. 

Construction is being administered by the Iowa DOT. Periodic updates will be made through Iowa DOT’s 511 system, and updates regarding adjacent City of Ankeny streets will be noted above.

Progress Update

The Contractor will be working on sidewalk tie-ins and raised median work in the upcoming weeks.  Paint markings and traffic signal switches will also occur as weather permits.  Temporary traffic control may vary from day to day to accommodate the raised median work.  Please continue to use caution and be aware when traveling this corridor.  Delays are anticipated and alternate routes are encouraged. -- updated 9/18/17 

Traffic signal and paving improvements continue throughout the project limits.  The Contractor plans to pave the final tie-in at the intersection of Oralabor/Delaware the week of Sept. 11. This work will be followed by construction of raised medians throughout the corridor, paint markings and traffic signal switches.  Temporary traffic control will vary from day to day to accommodate the paving operations.  Please use caution and be aware when traveling this corridor.  Delays are anticipated and alternate routes are encouraged. -- updated 9/11/17 

Traffic Signal upgrades and paving improvements continue throughout the project limits.  Underground utility work is nearing completion at the SE Oralabor Road and SE Delaware Avenue intersection.  This work will be followed by pavement widening at the intersection and construction of raised medians throughout the corridor.  Temporary traffic control may vary from day to day to accommodate paving operations.  Please pay close attention to the orange signs and cones when driving through this corridor.  Traffic impacts requiring lane reductions will primarily occur between 7 PM and 6 AM, however periodic delays should be anticipated at any time throughout the corridor. -- updated 8/30/17 

Traffic Signal upgrades continue throughout the project limits.  To minimize traffic disruptions, there may temporarily be extra traffic signal heads at the intersections.  The active traffic signal heads will remain visible and the other traffic signal heads will be covered.  Underground utility work continues around the four legs of the SE Oralabor Road and SE Delaware Avenue intersection.  This work will be followed closely by pavement widening.  Traffic impacts requiring lane reductions will primarily occur between 7 PM and 6 AM, however periodic delays should be anticipated at any time throughout the corridor. -- updated 8/1/17 

Traffic Signal upgrades continue to be ongoing throughout the project limits.  Pavement widening efforts are currently focused along SE Oralabor Road, west of SE Delaware Avenue.  Public utility work has now begun closer to the SE Oralabor Road and SE Delaware Avenue intersection.  Underground utility work will continue around the four legs of this intersection and be followed by pavement widening in the upcoming months.  Traffic impacts requiring lane reductions will primarily occur between 7 PM and 6 AM, however periodic delays should be anticipated at any time throughout the corridor. -- updated 7/12/17 

Traffic Signal upgrades are ongoing at the I-35 Entrance and Exit Ramps along SE Oralabor Road, and at the intersection of SE Oralabor Road and SE Delaware Avenue.  Utility work and pavement widening continue west of SE Delaware Avenue.  Traffic Impacts requiring lane reductions will primarily occur between 7 PM and 6 AM, however periodic delays should be anticipated at any time throughout the corridor.  -- updated 6/20/17

 Traffic Signal upgrades continue at the I-35 Entrance and Exit Ramps along SE Oralabor Road.  Utility work and pavement widening have begun west of SE Delaware Avenue.  SE Oralabor Road is reduced to one-lane in each direction between SE Peachtree Drive & SE 19th Lane due to water main construction.  These lane restrictions are anticipated to be ongoing until June 19th. -- updated 6/5/17
