Road Construction Set to Begin on Northeast 36th Street Monday, March 20

Post Date:03/15/2017 8:33 AM
The City of Ankeny will begin a significant road construction project on Northeast 36th Street Monday, March 20. Northeast 36th Street will be closed to all through traffic from North Ankeny Boulevard/U.S. Highway 69 to Northeast Delaware Avenue starting March 20 and is expected to reopen in November.

Northeast 36th Street will be reconstructed from a two-lane road, from just east of North Ankeny Boulevard to just west of Northeast Delaware Avenue, into a new four-lane divided street with raised medians and left turn lanes. Last year, the City widened the Northeast 36th Street bridge over Fourmile Creek from two lanes to four lanes in preparation for this project. Closing Northeast 36th Street to through traffic will allow for the reconstruction project to be completed in one construction season and will also have the added benefit of saving on the cost of the overall project.

Traffic will be detoured around the construction site for the duration of the project. Eastbound through traffic will be detoured south from Northeast 36th Street at North Ankeny Boulevard, east on Northeast 18th Street, and north on NE Delaware Avenue to Northeast 36th Street. Westbound through traffic will be detoured south from Northeast 36th Street at Northeast Delaware Avenue, west on Northeast 18th Street, and north on North Ankeny Boulevard. Additional signage will be posted for motorists traveling to Briarwood Golf Course, Des Moines Orthopaedic Surgeons, First United Methodist Church and the Outdoor Education Center. The NE 36th interchange at Interstate 35 will be open during the construction, and local traffic will be allowed to access Casey’s and the Bentgrass Townhomes from Northeast 36th Street at the west limits of the project. When complete, the project will provide increased traffic capacity and mobility due to the tremendous growth this corridor has experienced in the last five years. It will also help improve safety for both motorists and pedestrians.
