Ankeny Officials Break Ground on New Fire Station
Ankeny City officials broke ground today on a new fire station on the north side of town. Ankeny residents passed a bond referendum in May with an 86 percent approval in support of the project. Fire Station No. 3 will be located on the corner of NE 36th Street and NE Otter Creek Drive.
“We are proud to break ground today on such an important project for the community,” says Mayor Gary Lorenz. “Building a third fire station is a milestone for Ankeny and a pivotal point in the growth of our city. Public safety is a priority for the Ankeny City Council and by adding a new fire station on the north side of town, we are able to continue to our efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of the entire Ankeny community.”
Designed by SVPA Architects, Inc., the city is using the same building plans, with some minor modifications, as Fire Station No. 2. DDVI, Inc. is the contractor for Fire Station No. 3. Construction on Fire Station No. 3 is expected to be completed by September 2018 and the new station will be staffed with five firefighters/paramedics around the clock when it opens.
Ankeny’s population has more than doubled over the past 15 years. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Ankeny is the fastest growing city in the Midwest and 14th fastest growing city in the U.S. with a population of 50,000+. Ankeny has a Fire Station Headquarters located at 120 NW Ash Street and Fire Station No. 2 located at 665 SE Oralabor Road.
