ANKENY, Iowa (March 9, 2010) - In 2007 the Mayor’s Youth Council (MYC) created two annual awards to recognize exceptional youth in the Ankeny community. MYC, a committee of 15 middle and high school youth appointed by the mayor to represent the city’s young people, will recognize a Youth of the Year and Youth Club of the Year. Applications are available now and nominations will be accepted through March 19.
The Youth of the Year is given to an individual who, over the last year, has made positive life choice and enriched the Ankeny community through their service. To be eligible, the nominee must be high-school aged attending Ankeny High School, Ankeny Christian Academy or any high school-aged person being home-schooled and living within the Ankeny city limits.
The Youth Club of the Year recognizes an exceptional youth organization that has served their fellow citizens and/or created an environment for others to serve. Clubs are eligible if they are youth-based involving junior high and high school-aged kids and do the majority of its work and service in the City of Ankeny.
Nominations can come from any person wishing to nominate a youth or youth club, regardless of residency, age or position. Forms are also available at the Ankeny Parks & Recreation office located at 210 S. Ankeny Blvd and can be faxed to 515-965-6719.
Award recipients will be selected by the members of MYC, based on the information included in the nomination form. The winners will be notified and publicly announced at the Youth Leadership Symposium on Saturday, April 10. This year’s Symposium, which is free and open to students in grades 8 through 12, will also feature inspirational speaker Karen McCaa. Event pre-registration is required.
