ANKENY, Iowa (July 30, 2010) - The Internet provides children a gateway to the world, offering a glimpse into different cultures, languages and ideas. But online threats exist with children being especially vulnerable to online predators, hackers, spyware, viruses and identity theft. Many parents don’t possess the computer savvy children seem to come by naturally, and as a result, parents aren’t doing all they could be doing to protect their kids in the virtual world.

David Billings, crime scene investigator with the Ankeny police department and member of the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force, will offer parents important steps and rules to help ensure their child can explore the virtual universe in a safe and responsible way at a free lecture Thursday, August 19 at 6:30 p.m.

The program will be held at the Ankeny police department headquarters, 411 SW Ordnance Road. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. Due to limited seating, those interested are asked to reserve a spot by calling Lee Vogt at 515.289.5241 or email lvogt@ankenyiowa.gov.

This program is Part Two of the police department’s public safety lecture series.
