ANKENY, Iowa (Aug. 7, 2013) - At a special meeting tonight, the Ankeny city council selected David Jones as Ankeny’s next city manager and authorized Mayor Gary Lorenz to negotiate an employment agreement with him. Jones, currently county administrator for Polk County, Iowa, will replace Jim Spradling, who has been interim city manager since May 2012 and plans to retire at the end of this year.

Jones brings over 15 years of public administration experience, including five years in Tazewell County, Illinois as county administrator and most recently, as county administrator for Polk County. Jones has extensive experience in financial management and strategic budgeting.

As county administrator for Polk County, Jones was responsible for administration of county operations, staff and managing the budget. During his tenure, he facilitated the restructuring of the County organization, resulting in more than 60 position eliminations without layoffs and more than $4 million in recurring annual cost savings. Jones also implemented a more strategic budgeting processs that evaluates historical costs, service delivery and the Board of Supervisor’s strategic priorities.

“We had a number of outstanding and highly qualified applicants and everyone agreed that David was a standout candidate who will be the right fit for leading Ankeny,” said Ankeny Mayor Gary Lorenz. “He has a strong, conservative approach on fiscal matters and a solid planning and leadership background. He will do very well in a dynamic and growing community like Ankeny.”

Jones will be responsible for managing a staff of 200 full-time employees and a $100 million budget for all operations.

“I am very excited at the prospect of serving as Ankeny city manager,” said Jones. “My family and I live in Ankeny and are very much a part of community life here. Professionally, I look forward to working with the city council and staff to build upon the success of our outstanding community.”

Jones received a bachelor’s degree from Kennesaw State University, Georgia, with a major in communications and a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Tennessee.
