Training Division
It is the job of the Training Division to coordinate daily/weekly department drills and ongoing officer training as it relates to fire suppression. The Training Division is also responsible for providing training based on local, state and federal guidelines at the Emergency Medical Technician level through Paramedic Specialist designation. It is our goal to provide appropriate training to our personnel and measure competency on a regular basis.
The Training Division provides guidance in daily crew trainings to encompass all department members’ working shifts. It is designed to provide an average of 2 hours of training per 24 hour time frame. Guidelines and topics are chosen and study materials are provided for the shift officer to conduct the training evolutions. To remain compliant with the National Fire Protection Administration guidelines, Job Performance Requirements (JPR’s) have been implemented. These are specifically recognized tasks that all firefighters throughout the United States are required to perform. Verification of these skills is tested twice a year and includes both written and manipulative skills stations.
The Ankeny Fire Department conducts weekly departmental trainings that are normally larger in scope and detail than the daily crew trainings. The Training Division assembles the training plans utilizing both internal as well as external instructors to provide the highest quality training for its personnel. Examples of fire/rescue training include:
- Fire suppression
- Ventilation
- SCBA drills
- Ice/water rescue
- Vehicle extrication
- Specialized rescue practices
- Hose deployment and advancement
- Hazardous Material response
- Pump operations and hydraulics are meticulously practiced and revised.
All members must attend an average of 75% of the weekly trainings per quarter.
In addition to the previously mentioned tasks, the Training Division is charged with overseeing the continuing education courses, which are essential to maintaining the EMS division. This includes planning all monthly paramedic trainings and half of the weekly EMS trainings. Training is provided on a variety of trauma-related topics. It is not uncommon to have physicians from local hospitals as well as various field experts conducting training. Completion of certification programs such as ACLS, PALS/PEPP, PHTLS and National Registry Refresher programs are also coordinated through this department. The training division assures personnel meet their benchmarks for participation.
