The popularity of Prairie Ridge Sports Complex has grown tremendously since opening in October, 2000. The sports groups that utilize the Complex have experienced an average 6% yearly growth in recent years and the proliferation of tournament/traveling teams has also grown through organizations such as USSSA, AAU, and others.
The City of Ankeny has five‐year leases with each of the following local sports groups: Little League, Girls Softball, Junior Football, and the Iowa Rush Soccer Club. These leases provide for use of the Complex by the aforementioned clubs during their specific sports season, with each sports group paying the City a fee for this usage. The fee helps to defer general operation costs and costs specific to maintenance of the various sports fields.
As Prairie Ridge Sports Complex activity has grown, one of the challenges has been field space to accommodate practice activities. The City of Ankeny has and continues to seek out feasible open green space whereby additional fields; specifically for practices, could be constructed. However the current state of the city’s budget, combined with the economic downturn has slowed this process and the reality is that it will likely be several years until additional space for sports practices is secured. The City has partnered with the Girls Softball Association to add sports field lighting to four fields at Prairie Ridge, which helps add hours of availability at the Complex. The City has also partnered with Little League to add sports field lighting to six fields at Prairie Ridge.
The specific interim challenge that the City, sports clubs, and local non‐sports club affiliated teams face is space for practice. In the past, scheduling conflicts have arisen at the Complex, specifically between teams with sports clubs that the City has a lease with and teams that are not affiliated with the sports clubs that the City has no lease with. The conflicts have been primarily related to field space and usage for practice activities. The City of Ankeny believes that the growth of Complex activities, the growth of our local lease‐based clubs, and the growth of local non‐sanctioned teams (USSSA, AAU, parent‐based travel teams) necessitates a policy with regard to field usage.
Prairie Ridge Sports Complex is recognized as a “special use facility”. In essence it is no different from a golf course or swimming pool in that there should be an expectation of “pay to play”. Therefore, with that in mind, combined with the above referenced information; a policy beginning with the 2011 season has been developed.
Field Reservation/Usage Policy
- During the months of April to July, softball fields #45 and #46 will be made available for outside rentals during the hours of 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday thru Thursday if field space is available. Please note that hours of availability may change due to time of sunset during spring and fall. This field may be reserved by either softball or baseball teams not affiliated with Little League or Ankeny Girls Softball. Affiliation shall be defined as being part of the official Little League or Girls Softball program at Prairie Ridge Sports Complex. Other selected times may be available after July.
- During the months of April through October, baseball field #9 will be made available for outside rentals during the hours of 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday evenings if field space is available. Please note that hours of availability may change due to time of sunset during spring and fall. This field may be reserved by baseball teams not affiliated with Little League. Affiliation shall be defined as being part of the official Little League program at Prairie Ridge Sports Complex.
Fees shall be as follows:
Fields will be scheduled based on a lottery system. All non‐Little League and/or non‐Girls Softball affiliated teams must submit their desire to reserve field space. A lottery for practice assignments will be made on or around the end of March each year. A $50 deposit will be due to guarantee your reservation in the lottery.
Following completion of the field rental program, an invoice will be sent to the renter, and shall be payable within 30‐days of receipt. The $50 deposit shall be credited to the renter’s final invoice.
Subject to availability, fields 16, 19, and 20 shall be made available for football or soccer teams not affiliated with the Iowa Rush or Ankeny Junior Football. Affiliation shall be defined as being part of the official Iowa Rush or Ankeny Junior Football program at Prairie Ridge Sports Complex.
- Teams wanting to use the field rental program must have a majority of the players living inside the Ankeny School District.

Hawkeye Park Athletic Complex
This Complex is generally open and the two softball fields can be used for practices any time prior to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Teams must be off fields by 5 p.m. There will be no charge assessed and field usage is on a “first come, first serve” basis.
