ANKENY, Iowa (Nov. 20, 2012) - At a public meeting last night, the Ankeny City Council announced their intention to fill the mayoral vacancy by appointment. Current Mayor Steve Van Oort was recently elected to the Polk County Board of Supervisors and has submitted a letter of resignation effective at noon on December 7, 2012.

The Council considers an appointment the most practical way to fill the vacancy and the appointee will serve the remainder of the term which ends December 31, 2013.

“The City has important work to do in the coming months including our annual strategic goal setting retreat and the budget,” said Council Member Mark Holm. “Having an experienced and competent individual help facilitate this work is important to us and more importantly to the citizens we serve.”

Citizens interested in being considered for the appointment are asked to submit a letter of interest which should include:

  • Address
  • Phone #
  • Email
  • Experience

Letters of interest must be received by November 30, 2012 at 5 p.m. Send to:

The Council will review the letters of interest and consider the appointment at a special meeting scheduled for Monday, December 10th at 5 p.m.

The city council had two options in filling the mayoral seat: (1) appoint someone to serve the remainder of the mayor’s term which ends December 31, 2013 or (2) call for a special election, which would occur no later than March 2013.

The City Clerk’s Office compiled this FAQ which generally explains the timeline and steps pursuant to Iowa Code Section 362.3 to fill the Mayoral vacancy:

  • Date of Mayor Van Oort resignation – December 7, 2012- Noon
  • Deadline to fill vacancy:
    -By Appointment – within 40 days of vacancy
    -If by Special Election – at earliest practicable date no later than 90 days after vacancy which would be Tuesday, March 5, 2013
  • Council Notice of Intent to Appoint- Council meeting of November 19, 2012.
    -Must publish no less than four days nor more than 20 days from date of appointment: Notice of Intent will be published on Monday, November 26, 2012.
    -Council may make the appointment to fill the vacancy after the Notice is published or after the vacancy occurs whichever is later.
  • A petition requesting a special election must be filed within 14 days after the publication of notice or within 14 days after the appointment is made, whichever is later. Per Polk County Election Office, 289 signatures are required on the petition.
  • If a petition requesting a special election is filed within the time required, council will set the date of election, which will occur no later than March, 2013.
  • If there are more than two candidates running for the mayoral office, a primary will be required. The primary has to be held on the Tuesday that is 28 days prior to the special election date.
