CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION

The City of Ankeny hiring process for Police Officer is a two step process. The first step is Civil Service Commission certification. This step is accomplished through several tests and evaluation measures, which are described below. You must be certified by the Commission in order to advance to the second step of the hiring process, which is the Police Department evaluation/selection process. It is also briefly described below.

The Civil Service tests include a physical agility and written exam.

The physical agility test includes sit-ups, push-ups, flexibility, and a mile and one half run. Please wear comfortable clothes and tennis shoes for the agility testing. See below for the minimum physical fitness performance requirements chart. The agility test is a pass/fail exam; you must pass all four sections.

Candidates that pass the physical agility will be eligible to take the written examinations. The civil service written examination is the National Police Officer Selection Test (POST).

The POST test is a 75 minute timed test in four sections: mathematics, reading comprehension, grammar, and incident report writing. The minimum passing score is 80% on each of the four sections of this exam. Candidates who have previously taken the POST test and have a valid test score on file (within one year) with Stanard & Associates may elect to waive the exam and use their most recent test score, or may elect to retest with the City of Ankeny; however, the City will accept only the retest score.

The Iowa Law Enforcement Academy requires both the POST test and the Cooper Physical Agility Test. Failure to pass either of these tests will result in the candidate‚Äôs elimination from the hiring process. Following the Civil Service tests, the Civil Service Commission will certify a list of candidates eligible for hire. The Commission will certify the top forty candidates in the initial certification. Ranking will be determined by combining the POST test score with an education/experience assessment. Only those candidates certified by the Commission will advance to the second step of the hiring process.

The Police Department evaluation/selection process may include, but are not limited to, oral interviews,   medical evaluation, drug screening, psychological evaluation, polygraph examination, and an extensive background investigation. The Police Chief may select to hire any individual from the certified civil service list who has successfully completed this final step of the hiring process.
