The City of Ankeny is accepting applications for Engineering Technician-GIS in the Public Works department. The primary function is to ensure high quality data entry of vector and attribute data into the GIS database. Data entry will be done in a versioned ArcSDE environment. Data sources available will range from civil engineering plans, in both paper and digital formats, to field collected GPS datasets. The candidate should be comfortable with georeferencing said plans, converting AutoCAD data into an ESRI geodatabase format, and collecting data in the field using Trimble GeoXT hardware and ArcPad software. A high attention to detail and quality control of the data entry is a must.
Other responsibilities will include administering the construction plan archive, map books, map making and moving GIS data in and out of different formats. The ideal candidate will have 2-3 years hands on experience with ArcGIS Desktop software, ArcPad software, Trimble GeoXT hardware, working in a versioned geodatabase environment, and using large format scanner/plotter.
Also performs a variety of semiprofessional duties and related office duties within the engineering work group of the Public Works department. The ideal candidate would have knowledge of the principles of civil engineering, general construction, and municipal public works operations. Includes the ability to make moderately complex computations, maintain engineering records / databases, read and interpret engineering plans, and maintain effective working relationships with other employees. Computer –aided drafting (CAD ) knowledge and ability is helpful but not required.
Graduation from high school and two (2) years technical schooling with classes in G.I.S. (or an equivalent amount of education and experience) is required. Education beyond high school may be substituted at a rate of two (2) years experience for 1 year of education.
