Employment Information
All members of the Ankeny Fire Department are trained in fire suppression, rescue, and emergency medical services. More than 76% of all 911 calls made to the Ankeny Fire Department in 2017 were for emergency medical services.

The Ankeny Fire Department employs full-time, part-time, and paid-on-call (POC) personnel.

Qualifications
- 18 years of age or older
- Valid driver's license
- High School Diploma or GED
Part-Time / Paid-on-Call
- EMT or Paramedic certification or currently enrolled in EMT or Paramedic School
- Firefighter I certification preferred but not required
Full-Time
- Firefighter I and II certification
- EMT or Paramedic
- Hazardous Materials Operations
If hired, additional certification classes such as CPR, ACLS, D2 License, and / or CEVO may be required.
Career
A career in fire service is both challenging and rewarding. Ankeny Fire Department members operate on a schedule of 24 hours on-duty / 48 hours off-duty. A typical crew is made up of 5 to 6 members that work closely together for a 24-hour period. Calls for assistance of all kinds can and do come at any hour throughout the shift.
Firefighting and Emergency Medical Services are not the only required duties while on a 24-hour shift. Other assignments may include:
- Public Education
- Building Fire Inspections
- Hydrant Flushing
- Training
- Equipment maintenance
- Living at the fire station includes cleaning and cooking
When fighting fires or responding to EMS calls, turnout gear and equipment exceed a weight of 45 pounds and can reach a weight of more than 130 pounds. A significant amount of time is spent inspecting, cleaning, training with, and maintaining this gear and equipment.
