The City of Ankeny will close the intersection of NE 36th Street and NE Fourmile Drive to through traffic on Monday, April 24, 2023. The closure is necessary to begin the final stage of the NE 36th Street Reconstruction Project, I-35 to NE Fourmile Drive, that began last year. A detour will be in place for the duration of the project, which is expected to be completed in late July, weather permitting (see detour map).
The final stage of the project involves the complete reconstruction of the intersection of NE 36th Street and NE Fourmile Drive to add left-turn lanes in all directions and a right-turn lane from eastbound NE 36th Street to southbound NE Fourmile Drive. Following the completion of the intersection, permanent pavement markings and restoration will occur. When complete, traffic safety and capacity will be improved in the immediate vicinity of the project.
The City of Ankeny has coordinated with its Fire and Police departments, the Polk County Public Works Department and Iowa Department of Transportation regarding access and the maintenance of unobstructed routes for detours and emergency services.
Two other major construction projects are occurring in the area with the Iowa DOT and Polk County, both are indicated on the detour map.
The City of Ankeny and the contractor have a plan to construct an access at the intersection, for public safety equipment only, within approximately two weeks of the full closure and then maintain that access as much as possible while the intersection is reconstructed. While the City of Ankeny’s public safety team has a plan to respond to emergencies during the entire construction project, adding this public safety access will provide an additional layer of safety.
