Project Description

This project includes construction of a PCC trail along old railroad grade and under US Highway 69 by means of a cast-in-place RCB pedestrian tunnel with formliner.  The project also consists of earthwork, PCC street pavement, water main, storm sewer, traffic signal modifications, and other similar items generally located both west and east of South Ankeny Boulevard/US Highway 69, and north of the SW Ordnance Road & South Ankeny Boulevard intersection.

Progress Update

The contractor has started pavement removal for the east half of the RCB pedestrian tunnel.  Excavation work will continue and the contractor will start constructing the east half of the pedestrian tunnel the week of June 22. -- updated 6/25/20 

The contractor has completed the west half of the RCB tunnel and has patched the pavement back in.  The contractor plans to shift the traffic to head-to-head in the southbound lanes on June 19. -- updated 6/18/20 

The contractor is continuing the construction of the RCB pedestrian tunnel.  Work on the west part the RCB pedestrian tunnel will continue through mid-June. -- updated 6/3/20

The contractor has started excavating in the south bound lanes for the construction of the cast-in-place RCB pedestrian tunnel.  Construction of the tunnel will begin the week of April 27. -- updated 4/28/20 

On April 21, south bound traffic will be shifted to the inside north bound lane.  North and southbound traffic will be restricted to one lane in each direction.  The contractor will then remove pavement on the south bound lanes and start driving piling.  This will allow for the construction of the High Trestle Trail tunnel under South Ankeny Blvd. -- updated 4/21/20 

The contractor resumed work April 8.  There will be lane closures during construction in 2020, but at least one lane of traffic will be open in each direction at all times. -- updated 4/14/20

The contractor has completed the first phase of the project.  The work associated with US Highway 69/S Ankeny Blvd and trail paving will be completed in 2020. -- updated 11/20/19

The contractor should finish the water main boring under South Ankeny Boulevard the week of Sept. 22.  They will then start grading the trail. -- updated 9/5/19 

The contractor will start boring a water main under South Ankeny Boulevard the week of Aug. 26.  They will also be starting grading on the trail. -- updated 8/20/19 

Beginning on Monday, Aug. 5, SW Ordnance Road was closed from south of the entrance to Ankeny High School to SW Ankeny Boulevard.  During the closure, traffic should follow the posted detour using SW Magazine Road and SW Cherry Street.  Pending any weather delays, the road will be re-opened in the afternoon of Friday, Aug. 9.  Following this, the contractor will start boring a water main under South Ankeny Boulevard and continue with storm sewer work. -- updated 8/6/19 

The contractor will begin working on boring a water main under South Ankeny Boulevard the week of July 29.  Beginning on Monday, Aug. 5, SW Ordnance Road will be closed from south of the entrance to Ankeny High School to SW Ankeny Boulevard.  During the closure, traffic should follow the posted detour using SW Magazine Road and SW Cherry Street.  This road closure is needed to install a new culvert under SW Ordnance Road.  Pending any weather delays, the road will be re-opened in the afternoon of Friday, Aug. 9. -- updated 7/30/19

The project was bid on May 14 and awarded on May 20.  Construction is expected to begin this summer.  Additional information will be provided in July when the contractor's schedule is determined. -- updated 6/10/19 

The project was originally bid in February 2019; however, the bids were rejected due to high bid prices.  The project has been repackaged to encourage better bid prices, and it will be re-bid in May 2019. -- updated 4/16/19
