Project Description

The Ankeny Boulevard and First Street Intersection Improvements project includes traffic safety and mobility improvements by modifying the east and west approaches to transition the westbound through lanes and provide a single westbound left turn lane and a dedicated westbound right turn lane.  Other associated improvements include new landscaping and pedestrian ramps at the four quadrants of the intersection along with a new traffic signal.

Progress Update

The sidewalk improvements are substantially complete, and all sidewalks are open to pedestrians.  Landscaping and irrigation within the raised medians and within the planting beds behind the sidewalks in all four quadrants will be completed in late May and early June.  There will be intermittent lane closures associated with the landscaping and irrigation work. -- updated 5/14/19 

Work is scheduled to begin Monday, April 15.  Work to be completed this spring includes the colored and textured concrete associated with the sidewalk improvements.  There will be intermittent lane closures associated with the sidewalk work between the hours of 8:30 A.M. and 4:30 P.M.  Landscaping within the raised medians and within the planting beds behind the sidewalk in all four quadrants is scheduled to be completed immediately following the sidewalk improvements.  There will also be intermittent lane closures associated with the landscaping work.  It is anticipated that all remaining work in the vicinity of the intersection will be complete by the beginning of June.  -- updated 4/9/19

Project is now in winter shutdown. Work to be completed next spring includes the colored and textured concrete associated with the sidewalk improvements.  Temporary concrete sidewalk connections have been made at all four quadrants of the intersection to serve pedestrians during the interim.  There will be intermittent outside lane closures associated with the colored and textured concrete sidewalk work next spring.  Landscaping within the raised medians and the planting beds behind the sidewalks at all four quadrants will be completed in 2019. -- updated 12/18/19 

The new traffic signal and signage was installed during November, and all street pavement work is complete.  Work to be completed next spring includes the colored and textured concrete associated with the sidewalk improvements.  Temporary concrete sidewalk connections have been made at all four quadrants of the intersection to serve pedestrians during the interim.  There will be intermittent outside lane closures associated with the colored and textured concrete sidewalk work next spring.  Landscaping within the raised medians and the planting beds behind the sidewalks at all four quadrants will be completed in 2019. -- updated 11/27/18 

Street construction is complete.  The westbound lanes of East First Street approaching the intersection now operate as a single left turn only lane, two through only lanes, and a single right turn only lane.  The sidewalk improvements and new traffic signal will be completed in November, once the signal poles are manufactured and delivered.  There will be intermittent lane closures associated with both the sidewalk and traffic signal work.  Landscaping within the raised medians and behind the sidewalk at all four quadrants will be completed in 2019. -- updated 10/9/18 

Street construction is complete.  The westbound lanes of East First Street approaching the intersection now operate as a single left turn only lane, two through only lanes, and a single right turn only lane.  The sidewalk improvements are being completed in early fall.  The new traffic signal will be installed in November, once the poles are manufactured and delivered.  There will be intermittent lane closures associated with both the sidewalk and traffic signal work. -- updated 9/19/18 

Westbound West First Street between Ankeny Boulevard and Logan Street to Close Overnight Thursday, July 26. -- updated 7/26/18 

Street construction is ongoing and will be complete by late August.  During this time, intermittent lane closures will be in effect within the vicinity of the intersection.  For the safety of the construction workers, drivers are encouraged to slow down through this active construction zone.  The sidewalk improvements will be completed during the fall, once the new traffic signal poles are manufactured and delivered, and the existing traffic signal is removed and replaced.  The landscaping improvements will be completed by next spring. -- updated 7/24/18 

Street construction started on Monday, June 25 and will last six to eight weeks, weather permitting.  During this time, intermittent lane closures will be in effect on First Street between NW/SW School Street and NE Oak Drive, and on Ankeny Boulevard between SW/SE 3rd Street and the Hy-Vee entrance.  For the safety of the construction workers, drivers are encouraged to slow down through active construction zones.  The sidewalk improvements will be completed during the fall, once the new traffic signal poles are manufactured and delivered, and the existing traffic signal is removed and replaced.  Updated market conditions have increased the lead time for the procurement of traffic signal poles from three months to six months. -- updated 6/26/18

This project has been awarded.  The contractor will commence work on Monday, June 25, weather permitting.  The street improvements will be completed during the summer.  The sidewalk improvements will be completed during the fall, once the new traffic signal poles are manufactured and delivered, and the existing traffic signal is removed and replaced.  Updated market conditions have increased the lead time for the manufacturing and delivering of traffic signal poles from three months to five months. -- updated 5/30/18
