These operational changes  are reflective of the suggested guidelines provided by the Centers for Disease Control and the Iowa Department of Public Health.     City of Ankeny extends closures and cancellations

    The City of Ankeny announced it is extending closures and cancellations due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. This extension is based on Gov. Reynolds new proclamation continuing the State Public Health Emergency Declaration.

    The following closures and changes are effective through May 15, 2020:

    Public Buildings and Facilities

    •  All city office buildings are closed to the public, this includes: City Hall, Public Services, Police Headquarters and all Fire Stations. All residents, contractors and others are encouraged to do business via phone, email or the website. The entrance of City Hall serves as a drop zone for business that cannot be completed online or via phone. The lobby is not staffed.
    • All public facilities are closed, this includes: Ankeny Kirkendall Public Library, Prairie Ridge Sports Complex, Ankeny Market & Pavilion, Lakeside Center, Outdoor Education Center, Pinnacle Club, Skate Park and all shelter houses. All events and programming scheduled at these facilities are canceled through May 15.
    • Otter Creek Golf Couse is scheduled to re-open with restrictions on Thursday, May 7, 2020. More details will be released soon.

    Special Events

    • Ankeny Spring Cleanup and Tree and Branch Recycling events are postponed until further notice.
    • Yoga in the Park has been rescheduled to start June 6.
    • All Parks and Recreation youth and adult sports, leagues, classes and programs are canceled through May 31. The Parks & Recreation Department will be in touch with anyone who has registered. Fees will be refunded.
    • All events and programming at the Ankeny Kirkendall Public Library are canceled until further notice.

    Parks and Trails

    •  Playground equipment and shelter houses are closed.
    • The Skate Park is closed.
    • All park restrooms are closed and water fountains are turned off.
    • Parks and trails are open with restrictions. Social distancing is required. Avoid groups of people/crowded areas. If space cannot be enjoyed safely, go home or discover a new park.
    • Tennis, pickleball and basketball courts are open. Softball fields at Hawkeye Park are open. However, team sports, pickup games and contact play are prohibited on these courts and fields.
    • The Dog Park is open.


    • The City of Ankeny is temporarily suspending all solicitor licenses. Door to door soliciting is not allowed.
    • The Ankeny Fire Department has suspended commercial building inspections and other activities where there is significant public contact.
    • The Fire Department does not participate in drive-by birthday celebrations.
    • The Ankeny Police Department has suspended fingerprinting services, squad ride-alongs and building tours.
    • Rental inspections and building inspections within occupied structures are suspended. Please contact the Building Division of the Planning and Building Department at (515) 963-3550 for specific questions.
    • Due dates for pet licenses will be extended through July 1.
    • New utility customers must set up service by calling the Customer Service Department directly at 515-963-3565. The office is closed to walk-ins. Payments are still expected by specified due dates. No service calls will be scheduled until further notice.
    • Fire, EMS and Law enforcement operations will continue in full force. Emergency planning protocols are in place should the situation change.
    • Staff will continue working behind the scenes, so please don’t hesitate to call or email departments directly. Plans are put into place to continue to do business. A staff and department contact list is available at

    Residents are encouraged to stay home and only go out for essentials. While visiting any public space, use your best judgment and act responsibly; bring your own sanitation supplies with you and adhere to recommended guidelines of social distancing. If you do not feel well or have been sick, stay home.
