Major Street Construction Project Set to Begin on Northwest Fifth Street Monday, April 16

Post Date:04/10/2018 11:35 am

The City of Ankeny will begin the NW Irvinedale Drive and NW Fifth Street Intersection Improvements Project on Monday, April 16, weather permitting. During the first phase of the project, NW Fifth Street, along with the adjacent trail and sidewalk, will be closed to through traffic from just east of NW Boulder Brook Boulevard to just west of NW Irvinedale Drive. Construction is expected to be completed in October. When complete, the project will provide increased traffic capacity and mobility at the intersection, along with improving safety for both motorists and pedestrians.

The project includes reconstructing the intersection of NW Irvinedale Drive and NW Fifth Street to provide dedicated left turn lanes in all four directions. The street reconstruction in the vicinity of the intersection will include replacing the existing asphalt rural roadways with concrete urban streets including curbs and gutters. Other associated improvements include: a new traffic signal; storm sewer, sanitary sewer and water main upgrades; and a retaining wall along the west side of NW Irvinedale Drive between NW Fifth Street and NW Ninth Street.

In early June, the second stage of the project will begin and NW Irvinedale Drive, along with the adjacent trail and sidewalk, will be closed to through traffic from just north of West First Street to just south of NW Ninth Street.

Traffic will be detoured around the construction site for the duration of the project. For the first stage, NW Fifth Street through traffic will be detoured south to West First Street via NW Weigel Drive from the west and NW Irvinedale Drive from the east. View the detour map for the first stage. A separate news release will be issued in late May detailing the second stage of construction and the closure of NW Irvinedale Drive.
