Traffic Enforcement Project Friday in Ankeny

Post Date:05/09/2018 2:07 p.m.
On Friday May 11, several metro area law enforcement agencies will be assisting the Ankeny Police Department with a traffic enforcement project in the city of Ankeny. The project is organized by the Central Iowa Traffic Safety Task Force (CITSTF) and the Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau (GTSB).

Officers from many central Iowa jurisdictions will be in Ankeny enforcing all traffic laws during this project with a greater emphasis being placed on those violations that have a higher probability to lead to traffic accidents; such as the unlawful use of an electronic communication device while driving and traffic signal violations. There will be officers in plain clothes and unmarked vehicles monitoring some of the busier traffic locations in the city to identify violators.

Texting while driving is one of the most dangerous distractions while driving a car. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration sending or reading a text message takes your eyes off the road for five seconds. Traveling 55 MPH, that is like driving the distance of a football field with your eyes closed. Driving a car always requires your full attention and no text message or phone call is worth the risk.
