Ankeny Police Respond to Shots Fired Call

Post Date:01/04/2019 10:29 a.m.

On Thursday, Jan. 3, 2019, at approximately 12:23 p.m., Ankeny police officers were sent to Fun and Action, 106 SW Linden St. Suite 1D, in response to a call of shots fired. Based upon information gathered from the caller, adjoining businesses and the above apartments evacuated. Ankeny police officers and deputies from the Polk County Sheriff’s Department entered the business after attempts to establish communication with the individual were unsuccessful. The individual was found deceased inside the business.

The decedent was identified as:

Clifford Scott Gottula (Age 45)
Arvada, CO

The 911 caller informed Polk County Dispatch that Gottula was going to be terminated by the business. After receiving this information, Gottula went into a nearby bathroom at which point employees heard what they believed to be a gunshot.

Upon officers’ arrival, a protective perimeter was established around the building and employees from Fun and Action were sheltered in a nearby safe location. Other adjoining businesses were evacuated as were the apartment residents on the second floor. At the request of the Ankeny Police Department, Polk County Dispatch used “Code Red” to notify people within a quarter mile to shelter in place.

After unsuccessful attempts at establishing communication with Gottula by a negotiator, officers and deputies entered the business where they found Gottula dead inside, from what appeared to be a self-inflected gunshot wound.

Ankeny detectives processed the scene and the investigation is ongoing.

The Ankeny Police Department was assisted at the scene by the Ankeny Fire Department, Polk County Sheriff’s Department and the Polk County Medical Examiner.
