Ankeny Sets Record for Commercial Development in 2018
The City of Ankeny experienced another outstanding year for commercial and residential construction activity in 2018 with totals surpassing $322 million. This is the third largest year for total investment on record and the fifth consecutive year with at least $300 million of total construction activity.
Highlights of the $322 million construction activity in 2018 include:
• 2018 was a record year for new permitted commercial construction with total commercial investments at $142 million.
• Permits were issued for 31 new commercial buildings.
• The total residential valuation topped out at $173 million with 407 single family homes, 184 townhomes and 306 multifamily units.
• The remaining amount of the $322 million (approximately $6.8 million) comes from other additions, alterations and miscellaneous permits issued by the City.
“The commercial and residential growth Ankeny has experienced over the last five years is unprecedented. We are seeing growth across all business sectors, in all quadrants of the City.” said City Manager David Jones. “Ankeny offers a high level of stability and certainty, which makes it an ideal location for businesses to build and expand. As we look into 2019, we anticipate continued strong investment, particularly in commercial and industrial development.”
Ankeny saw a mix of large, medium and small businesses relocating, expanding and remodeling to meet the needs of the market. To help meet these demands, the City annexed 116 acres and platted 980 lots. All annexation was voluntary. The City issued 2,339 total permits, third most behind 2016 and 2017, when 2,719 and 2,597 permits were issued respectively.
While there were a number of new businesses and neighborhoods built in Ankeny in 2018, some of the more notable construction projects include PDI expansion, Residence Inn, B & B Movie Theater and B-Roll Bowling, ALDI’s, UnityPoint Laboratory, Ankeny Kirkendall Public Library, spec warehouse and several service provider projects.
