An important message from the Ankeny Fire Department
On Sunday morning, the Ankeny and Elkhart Fire departments were called out to I-35 at the 100 mile marker for an accident with injuries involving three vehicles. While en route, and as we arrived on scene, three additional accidents occurred. While Ankeny fire personnel were rendering aid, a pickup truck lost control, and struck the rear of the Ankeny fire engine. The accident caused significant damage to the pickup truck, and minor damage to the fire engine. No Ankeny fire personnel were injured, nor was the driver of the pickup, or the infant passenger inside. Poor visibility, as well as ice covered roads made travel dangerous.
The Ankeny Fire Department would like to take this opportunity to remind people to slow down around emergency vehicles. When visibility is bad, reduce speed to avoid an accident. When the Iowa DOT is recommending that travel is not advised, please heed that warning.
Another reminder is that it is a State Law in Iowa that you slow down or change lanes around any vehicle on the side of the roadway. This does not just include emergency vehicles, but any vehicles on the roadway. Failure to do so may result in penalties including significant fines and license suspension.
Please allow extra time when driving in bad weather, or stay home if possible. Slow down around emergency vehicles. No one’s life is worth taking chances on the road. Drive safe, arrive alive.
