City of Ankeny to host presentation ‘Healthy Soils, Healthy Streams: How to Have a Nice Lawn & Protect Water Quality’
The City of Ankeny invites the community to a special presentation by Soil Scientist Pat Sauer called ‘Healthy Soils, Healthy Streams: How to Have a Nice Lawn & Protect Water Quality’. The presentation will be held on Thursday, April 4, 6:30 – 7:30 p.m., at the Lakeside Center, 400 NW Lakeshore Drive. This is a free event, but registration is suggested.
During the presentation, participants will learn:
- How urban soils and home construction have dramatically altered the soil structure
- How soil testing can help determine what is needed to sustain a healthy lawn
- Methods to improve lawn quality
- How to decrease the amount of chemicals and water needed
- How to soak more rain into the ground
There will be time for questions after the presentation. Pat Sauer is an urban soil scientist from Ames, Iowa. She currently serves as the executive director of the Iowa Stormwater Education Partnership, of which the City of Ankeny is a member.
After the presentation, information will also be shared about the City’s Stormwater BMP Reimbursement Program which helps offset the cost to homeowners wishing to add sustainable landscaping practices. Some of these practices include soil quality restoration, native prairie planting, rain gardens and rain barrels. The City will provide up to a 50 percent match on BMPs constructed, with a maximum reimbursement amount of $1,800, per landowner or business. Rain barrels are funded at a maximum of $75, limit of one per address. The funding may be utilized for multiple practices, however, the maximum amount reimbursed will be $1,800 for all practices.
