SBA Names City of Ankeny as the 2019 SBA Iowa Small Business Community of the Year
The City of Ankeny is pleased to share this announcement on behalf of the SBA.
The Iowa District Office of the U.S. Small Business Administration will honor the city of Ankeny as the recipient of its 2019 SBA Iowa Small Business Community of the Year Award.
This is the fifth year for the award, which highlights community efforts to support small business. The City of Ankeny was recognized by the SBA’s Iowa District Office based on the following criteria:
- Key programs and incentives implemented to attract and retain small businesses.
- Leveraging of community resources with other federal, state, county and local programs to benefit the small business community.
- Examples of how the community directly contributed to the success of local small businesses.
“The SBA is very excited to recognized Ankeny for its commitment to small business success,” said Jayne Armstrong, district director of the SBA’s Iowa District Office. “The city has invested a lot of time and effort in building an infrastructure and resource network for start-up and expanding small businesses to survive and thrive.”
One of the key economic development initiatives the SBA recognized Ankeny for was the creation of the Ankeny Alliance, a partnership between the Ankeny Area Chamber of Commerce, the Ankeny Economic Development Corporation and the City of Ankeny. This alliance works to ensure all local economic development efforts are coordinated and aligned to best serve the needs of Ankeny’s small business community.
These efforts, programs and initiatives under the Ankeny Alliance banner include the Business Advisory Group, the Ankeny Seed Capital Investors network, a Workforce Development Initiative and a Business Retention and Expansion group. In addition, Ankeny Alliance representatives are also active in the work of the Cultivation Corridor (which focuses on the growth of the ag-based industry in Iowa, including small agri-businesses).
Ankeny is also the host site of Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) one of Iowa’s top institutions for entrepreneurial training and a host of the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses partnership with Iowa’s community college network. In addition, the city is a Home Base Iowa Community and through this program, the city provides veterans and transitioning service members and their families with opportunities and benefits for a successful transition to Ankeny, which often includes opportunity for entrepreneurship.
“We are thrilled to be recognized by the SBA, a valuable partner in Ankeny’s economic development success. This award is confirmation of the proactive pro-business approach we provide to support the small business community in Ankeny,” said Ankeny Mayor Gary Lorenz. “We’ve been fortunate to see small businesses in Ankeny thrive and we know how valuable the impact is, on not only our economy but the entire state of Iowa.”
The award will be presented to Ankeny during the Iowa Smart Conference in Des Moines on Thursday, May 9, 2019. It will be re-presented at a local event in Ankeny (TBD) later in May.
