Ankeny has subscription garbage collection in which each resident contracts individually with a garbage hauler. The following companies provide residential services in Ankeny:

Residential Garbage Haulers

Residents should contact the above companies for information on

  • Garbage collection rates
  • Pickup days and times
  • Large item (furniture, appliances, etc.) pickup procedures and fees
  • Special pickup for elderly or disabled residents
  • Yard waste collection and fees


The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)estimates that 75 percent of our waste is recyclable. The American Forest and Paper Association (AF&PA) states that 87 percent of the U.S. population, or 268 million people, have access to curbside or drop-off recycling programs.

Metro Waste Authority's Curb It! program provides each residential household in MWA's service area a 96-gallon cart with automated collection with every other week pickup. For those who generate less trash, 48-gallon carts are available. Requests for the smaller carts can be made by calling 24-GREEN. An exchange fee may apply. Check the lid on your cart for the pickup schedule in your area, and be sure to set your cart out by 7:00 a.m.

Ankeny Recycling Events

The City of Ankeny and the Public Works department host a variety of recycling and clean up events throughout the year. For specific dates and times, please consult the city's calendar.

Ankeny Cleanup Days

Got junk? Get rid of it! The annual Ankeny Cleanup Days are held at the Prairie Ridge Family Aquatic Center, located at 1220 NW Prairie Ridge Dr.

Trucks larger than a pickup are prohibited from participating in the disposal of cleanup debris. Ankeny residents can dispose of items commercial hauler charge for or do not pickup. The following list of materials and debris not accepted at the cleanup site:

Five (5) residential passenger or truck tires off rims will be accepted. All other tires will not be accepted which includes semi, tractor, farm or solid tires.

Appliance and Electronics Recycling Day

The City of Ankeny sponsors an Appliance and Electronics Recycling Day. The City of Ankeny is working with H & W Recycling to allow residents to drop-off a number of household appliances and electronics. While most items are accepted free of charge, a fee is charged for monitors and televisions based on the size of the unit.

Tree and Branch Recycling

  • Tree and Branch Recycling Days will be held Saturday May 20 from 8 a.m to 4 p.m., Sunday, May 21 from Noon to 4 p.m., Saturday, June 24 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturday, October 7 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the City Maintenance Facility, 211 SE Lorenz Drive.

Held multiple times each year, the program allows Ankeny residents to dispose of trees and branches free of charge.

Trees and branches must have a trunk size no larger than 8" in diameter will not be accepted. Debris larger than 8" in diameter will not be accepted because of its inability to be recycled through the city chipper. Branches less than one (1) inch in diameter, twigs, tree roots, stumps and yard waste will not be accepted. Residents are asked to have the cut end of their branches stacked at the end of their vehicles for easy removal.

Residents residing within the corporate limits of Ankeny may participate in this program.

Commercial vehicles and trucks larger than a pickup are prohibited from participating in this recycling program.

Leaf Collection Days

  • Leaf Collection Days will be held Saturday, Oct. 28 through Sunday, Nov. 19 (Extended through Wednesday, Nov. 22 at noon) at the Prairie Ridge Aquatic Center, 1220 NW Prairie Ridge Drive.

The designated site for leaf collection is the Prairie Ridge Family Aquatic Center, located at 1220 NW Prairie Ridge Drive.

The leaf collection site is open for leaf disposal 24 hours a day. City crews will assist residents on four consecutive weekends beginning Saturday, Oct. 28 through Sunday, Nov. 19 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., each day. Leaves collected in yard waste bags are permitted, and may be disposed in the containers provided. Plastic bags and other containers shall be removed by the resident following leaf disposal. If leaves are not brought in bags, residents will need to provide their own tools and unload the leaves themselves.

No open burning is allowed in Ankeny, so plan to take advantage of this no cost opportunity to dispose of your leaves. Residents residing within the corporate limits of Ankeny may participate in this program.

Holiday Tree Pick-up

Held each January, residents are required to place their tree in the city street right-of-way. City crews will make one pass through the community. Residents living in private developments or on private streets shall place their trees upon the city right-of-way to be picked up. City crews will not be driving on private streets or drives to pick up trees.

Trees shall be free of all ornaments, decorations, tree stands and plastic hauling bags. Please secure your tree to keep the tree from blowing onto the street and creating a traffic hazard. No other trees or branches will be collected during the pickup program. Held each January, residents can place their holiday trees along the curb, in the right-of-way. Trees must be free of all ornaments, decorations, tree stands and plastic bags.
