Public Involvement and Participation
Public involvement and participation is an important aspect of the stormwater program. One way to include the public is by the ongoing work of the Ankeny Water Quality Improvement and Stormwater Education (WISE) Group. The group was established in 2005 to work with volunteer groups concerned with stormwater and provide a community perspective to Ankeny's stormwater program. The group consists of citizens from the community with a variety of backgrounds.
Help Keep Our Streams and Watersheds Clean!
Our 11th Annual Stream and Watershed Cleanup is planned for Earth Day on April 22, 2017!
The clean-up location will be held at Promenade Lake, Vintage Lake, and Saylor Creek in Prairie Trial. The starting point will be at the parking lot east of Promenade Lake in the District in Prairie Trail, which is close to the corner of SW Vintage Parkway and SW Prairie Trail Parkway. It will be held between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m.
Volunteers will meet at the location above. The City will provide trash bags and vinyl gloves. Boots or shoes you don't mind getting wet or dirty are advised. Bring your own water bottle. Stop by any time between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. and stay as long as you can.
The City is giving away 150 free trees to Ankeny residents during the Stream and Watershed Cleanup event on April 22, 2017 starting at 8 a.m. The location will be at the parking lot east of Promenade Lake in the District in Prairie Trail, which is close to the corner of SW Vintage Parkway and SW Prairie Trail Parkway.
- The tree species are all native to Iowa and will include: black cherry, red oak, bald cypress, and redbud. These trees are 2 to 3 feet in height and can be planted in the right-of-way with a permit from the City.
- Trees will be given on a first-come, first-served basis.
- One tree per family.
Volunteers can make an incredible difference to our water quality! Picking up litter in your storm sewer intake or participating in a watershed cleanup can really help. You can also host your own cleanup. The City can provide bags and gloves and pick up the refuse when you are finished.
