Pressure and leak testing procedures will follow SUDAS Division 5, Section 5030, Part 3.05. Use fill out the New Main Pressure Test Form online. The form can also be downloaded here and is available at the Public Services building located at 220 West 1st Street.
The test report will need to be filled out by either the onsite inspector or by authorized City of Ankeny Staff. The installing contractor cannot stand as witness to the test. After the test is completed the report may be sent through the City's website or a hard copy can be brought to the Public Services building located at 220 West 1st Street, or faxed to (515) 963-3535 Attn: Water Department.
After the pressure test is received, we will schedule a bacteria test with the provided contact name and number.
Effective February 1, 2015, the AWWA (American Water Works Association) has adopted new standard procedures, AWWA C651-14, for disinfecting water mains. After the new water main has been pressure tested, chlorinated, and flushed the contractor may contact the City of Ankeny Water Department at (515) 963-3524 to schedule the collection of bacteria samples using one of the two options below provided in the AWWA standard.
Before approving a main for release, take an initial set of samples and then resample again after a minimum of 16 hr using the sampling site procedures outlined. Both sets of samples must pass for the main to be approved for release.
Before approving a main for release, let it sit for a minimum of 16 hr without any water use. Then collect, using the sampling site procedures outlined and without flushing the main, two sets of samples a minimum of 15 min apart while the sampling taps are left running. Both sets of samples must pass for the main to be approved for release.
A set of samples includes all samples collected along the length of the pipeline.
Refer to AWWA 651-14 for details of these procedures.
City of Ankeny Water staff will meet the contractor at the scheduled time and provide the necessary sample bottles and paperwork. Ankeny Water staff must witness the collection and sealing of the sample bottles. The contractor is responsible for the delivery of the samples to the Des Moines Water Works lab. Once the water main has passed the testing using one of the two allowed options above the City of Ankeny Water Department will allow the water main to be put in service.
If any bacterial sample fails, the water main may be flushed and resampled. If a second sample fails, the disinfection process and flushing process must be repeated and the City of Ankeny may meter the water used for flushing the water main and charge sampling costs back to the project contractor.
In an effort to better operate our system, we request contractors communicate with us prior to flushing a water main. Call (515) 963-3524 or e-mail. You may continue with the flush after leaving a message or email. We are currently using this information only to help insure that we are running our pressure zones efficiently and are able to continue to supply needed water volumes at sufficient pressures.
