Adult Programs Calendar

The Kirkendall Public Library provides lifelong learning experiences on a variety of topics. All programs are free and open to all adults. In addition to the regularly scheduled programs described below, the Kirkendall Public Library enlists guest speakers for educational programs. Volunteer presenters are encouraged to contact the library.

Adult Book Discussion

Book discussion books are available at the Check Out desk one month prior to the discussion. Book discussion is open to everyone. A long-term commitment is not required. Suggestions from readers are welcome.

  • End of Your Life Book Club meets the first Thursday of the month at 9:30 AM.  This group is led by Rachel Bradley, LMSW.  This book discussion will especially appeal to those dealing with loss or illness or faced with making end of life decisions.  Through the reading and discussing of books, both fiction and nonfiction, the group will discuss difficult issues common to us all.
  • Book & Movie Discussion meets the first Tuesday of the month at 1 PM. This group reads the book and watches the movie together and then discusses the strengths and weaknesses of each medium.
  • Reach Out & Read Book Club meets the second Tuesday of the month at 1 PM. 

  • Mystery Book Discussion meets the second Wednesday of the month at 1 PM. 

  • Evening Book Discussion meets the third Thursday of the month at 7 PM. 

  • YA & J Book Discussion meets the second Monday of the month at 6:30 PM. This group reads books written for children and young adults that appeal to adults as well.

  • By Hook or By Book Discussion Group meets the fourth Tuesday of the month at 1 PM. 

Ankeny Writers Group

The Ankeny Writers Group meets the third Saturday at 9 – 11:30 AM and offers educational programs on writing, publishing, and marketing your book.  This group includes published authors willing to offer tips and those considering their first writing project. 

 

English Learning  Conversation Circle

A Conversation Circle is a monthly gathering of adults who practice every day conversational English and get to know the public library! Meet once a month for 2 hours. Groups meet the third Monday at 1 - 3 PM or the fourth Thursday at 6:30 – 8:30 PM.  

  • Improve your English conversation and pronunciation.
  • Practice saying words used for job interviews, renting an apartment, using the phone.
  • Practice how to say words you need with teachers, health workers and others.
  • Participate in fun activities and learn about the library.
  • Enjoy lively conversation in a casual environment and make new friends.
  • Share your culture.

Spanish Language Conversation Circle

Spanish Learning Conversation Circle will be led by Blanca Guerrero, a native speaker and educator. 
 
A Conversation Circle is a monthly gathering of adults who practice every day conversational Spanish. The group will meet at the Library at 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. the second Tuesday of every month to practice pronunciation and syntax. A basic understanding of Spanish vocabulary and grammar is required.

No need to register, come and practice conversations for business, travel, or fun.

Games, Crafts & More

  • Social Cribbage meets the second & fourth Mondays at 1 – 3 PM. 

    All levels of players are welcome.  Bring your favorite cribbage board or use one of ours. Come for the fun! 

  • Sit & Knit meets the second Thursday of the month at 1 – 3 PM and the third Tuesday of the month at 6:30 – 8:30 PM. 

    A great place to meet new friends who share your passion for yarn. All ages and skill levels are welcome for a relaxing and informal time of knitting and camaraderie. Participants can bring a project in progress or beginners can learn the basics. Crocheters are also welcome.

    There is no cost for attending, however participants need to bring their own needles and materials for a project. 

  • Canasta meets the first and third Wednesday of the month at 1 – 3 PM. If you haven’t played in several years or missed out on the craze entirely, you have another chance to learn the game and make new friends.

  • Social Bridge meets the third Monday of the month at 1 – 3 PM.  What is fun, stimulating, and a great way to meet new friends?   If you are new to the game or a little rusty after years without a fourth, this is the perfect place for you.  Partners are not necessary.  There is a place at the table for you.

  • Let's Play Pitch! meets the third Tuesday at 1 – 3 PM. 

  • Chess Mix meets the third Thursday at 6:30 - 8:30 PM in the library adult area. Hone your chess skills and meet new friends. The purpose of this program is to promote the magnificent game of chess in Ankeny by bringing players of all ages and skill levels together at the library for a relaxing and informal evening of chess.  Bring your own board or use one of ours. 

  • Rummikub meets the third Thursday at 1 – 3 PM.

  • Ankeny Genealogy Chapter meets the fourth Monday of the month January through November at 7 PM. All are welcome. There is no fee to attend, but if you would like to become a member there is $10 for a family membership.  Each month features a program to help in your research.  Members are always available to help people with their research questions and try to get them over their brick walls when they hit one.

  • Music Appreciation for All Ages 4th Wednesday at 12:15 PM and 7 PM.  

    This program is led by Joan Jamison, MME.  Share Joan’s enthusiasm for great music and discover a different composer or genre of music each month. A short DVD will provide information and background.  Major works by the composer will be presented and discussed. 

  • Mah Jong meets every Wednesday at 6:30 – 8 PM.  Mah Jong is a Chinese game of skill played by four people with domino-like tiles, requiring cooperation and strategy among players.
