  • High School graduate or equivalent
  • Must be a United States citizen
  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Must have good moral character
  • Have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain one
  • Must be able to obtain an Iowa Professional Permit to carry weapons
  • Must pass physical test
  • Uncorrected vision of 20/100 in both eyes
  • Meet hearing standards
  • Not opposed to use of force
  • No record of assault, domestic abuse, stalking, weapons crime

Disqualifying Factors

The following actions will disqualify you from the application process.

  •  Discipline from an employer for physically fighting or assault in the workplace
  • Past conviction for aggravated misdemeanor in Iowa
  • Any conviction for simple/serious Iowa misdemeanor in past 3 years, except traffic
  • Conviction for OWI//DUI in past 5 years
  • Any outstanding criminal warrant at time of application
  • Any forgery, alteration or intentional misrepresentation of facts on application or during hiring process
  • Any adult use or possession of illegal drugs within past 5 years, marijuana 3 years.
  • Any adult manufacture, cultivation or sale of illegal drugs or prescription medication or facilitate in same
  • Any juvenile conviction for drug use, possession or sale resulting in conviction and court-ordered treatment
  • Conflict with fair and impartial enforcement/inability or unwillingness to use force
  • Currently the subject of a criminal investigation 

The following actions may disqualify you from the application process, a may disqualifier is determined at the sole discretion of the Police Chief.

  • Willful and intentional non-payment of debt, taxes or fiscal contracts
  • Other than honorable discharge from military
  • Missing scheduled appointments during process w/o permission
  • Discipline from employer or military for acts constituting sexual harassment, racial or ethnic harassment or discrimination
  • Illegal use, possession or sale of illegal drug or prescription medicine as a juvenile (except marijuana)
  • Any academic dismissal or probation from any college or university within past 3 years
  • Unfavorable recommendations for hire by references, employers, landlords or professional consultants engaged by the Ankeny Police Department
  • Termination by an employer for conduct that is contrary to justice, honesty or morality 
  • Alteration, misrepresentation or incomplete data on Personal History Statement
