City of Ankeny Receives Community Forestry Grant

City of Ankeny News - News Release Posted on May 02, 2025

The City of Ankeny is pleased to announce it was awarded a $9,918 grant through the Iowa Department of Natural Resources’ Community Forestry Grant Program. The funding will support the planting of 42 trees in seven locations across the city this spring.

Parks and Public Works crews are planting a mix of native trees along SW State Street, Estates Park, Village Park and the Ankeny Art Center. City crews and volunteers from the Ankeny Art Center kicked off the tree planting at the Ankeny Art Center.

“This funding will help the City rebuild Ankeny’s tree canopy following the widespread damage from the 2020 derecho and the loss of ash trees to the emerald ash borer,” said City Arborist Mike Stensrud. “In addition to beautification, the trees will help mitigate stormwater runoff and promote environmental sustainability in our parks and other public spaces.”

This is the third time Ankeny has received a Community Forestry Grant, following awards in 2021 and 2024.
