You Need A License to Pawn
Pursuant to Chapter 141 of the City's Municipal Code, any individual wishing to engage in the pawn business is required to have a license.
A pawnbroker license may be denied, suspended, or revoked if the applicant fails to comply with new or renewal application procedures, possesses a negative police report, falsification of new or renewal applications, or for the failure to maintain records in conformity with the requirements enumerated under Chapter 141.
"Negative police report" means a report or review compiled by the Chief of Police which discloses a criminal record of a felony, or any conviction under Chapter 141, two or more times in a calendar year, or a conviction under the Iowa Code.

All applications will be forwarded to the Ankeny Chief of Police for review, who will file a report with the City Clerk within 30 days of the application being received.
All licensed pawnbroker is required to display their license in their business so that it may be readily observed by all potential customers.
The fee for a pawnbroker's license is $500 and must be renewed annually.
