As stated in the Accounts Payable Policy (PDF), vendor payments are approved at City Council meetings on the first and third Mondays of each month.

Your username is the number on the back of your library card beginning with 2306. By default, the PIN is the last 4 digits of the phone number on the account. Library staff cannot see what the PIN is, so if you forget it, call 515-965-6460 opt. 3 or email library@ankenyiowa.gov to have it reset. 

If you would like to let someone else such as a spouse, child, or friend use your card to pick up your holds, check out items, view fines, etc. they will either need to have your library card or have permission from you. To grant someone permission, call 515-965-6460 opt. 3 or email library@ankenyiowa.gov with the name(s) of those you would like to add to your account. Permission is always assumed when the physical card is present, so report a lost card to library staff immediately.

Login to our catalog to see when your items are due, renew items, and place holds. You will need your library card number and your PIN, which are set up when you register.

Log on to your account and choose either Contact Information and Notification Preferences or Change Your Username & Password. 

Accounts must be renewed every three (3) years to make sure your information is current. You do not need to get a new card to renew your account. Call 515-965-6460 opt. 3 or email library@ankenyiowa.gov to renew.

No, your cameras and the stored camera footage are your property and we will not have access to them. In the event an officer investigating an incident contacts you asking for footage during a specific time period, you may choose to provide the footage requested.

Once the video footage is given to the Police Department, it will be reviewed and utilized by the investigators working on the case. In the event criminal charges are filed on a suspect, the video may be utilized in court at the discretion of the prosecuting attorney.

You have the right to refuse to provide video footage.

That is a possibility if the case goes to trial and you are subpoenaed to testify. However, many cases are resolved without a trial.

When It's Illegal to Pass a School Bus

• Amber (yellow) flashing lights indicate the bus is preparing to stop to load or unload children.
• Passing a school bus when the amber (yellow) flashing lights are activated is illegal.
• Motorists driving behind the bus should slow down and prepare to stop their vehicles when the amber lights are activated.
• Motorists approaching a school bus from the opposite direction than the school bus is traveling should reduce their vehicle’s speed to not more than 20 mph and prepare to stop. (The only exception to this is if there are two or more lanes in each direction, which then only the vehicles passing from behind the school bus need to stop.)

Red flashing lights indicate there are students loading or unloading.

• Motorists should use extreme caution during this time as students may be running to or from the school bus.
• Passing a school bus when the red flashing lights are activated is illegal. When the red lights flash and the stop arm extends, drivers in both directions must stop. (The only exception to this is if there are two or more lanes in each direction, which then only the vehicles passing from behind the school bus need to stop.)

Other School Bus Laws

• Passing a school bus in a loading / unloading zone is illegal. This law applies to buses on both private and public property when yellow or red lights are flashing and the stop arm is extended.
• Buses are not required to use flashing warning lights and the stop arm when loading or unloading students at designated loading and unloading zones at a school, extracurricular or educational locations. 
• Never pass on the right side of the bus, this is where children enter or exit the bus. This is illegal and can have tragic results.
• Motorists should use extreme caution any time when they are driving near buses in areas where there is a strong likelihood students could be loading or unloading.
• Once the students are discharged or loaded and the flashing lights are turned off and the stop arm is retracted, traffic may return to normal.

Kadyn's Law

On May 10, 2011, Kadyn Halverson, age 7 of Northwood, was struck and tragically killed by a pickup truck while trying to cross the road to board a school bus. In March 2012, Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad signed into law Senate File 2218, the "Keep Aware Driving — Youth Need School Safety Act," commonly known as "Kadyn's Law".

There are several types of child safety seats and what works best for your child really depends on a few factors:

• Your child
• the seat you choose
• and the vehicle you operate

This guide from the National Highway Traffic Safety Association is a good place to start.

The safest place for your child to be seated is in the back seat of your vehicle. Consult your vehicle’ manual and the manual of your car seat for more information. When in doubt, sign up to see a certified car seat technician to aid you in your installation.

Airbags have been designed to help protect adults in front-end collisions, but not children. It's very important that all children ages 12 and under or less than 5 feet tall be properly restrained in the back seat. If a child must ride in the front seat of the car, the front airbag must be turned off. (See your vehicle owner’s manual) 

• the child must be properly restrained, in a restraint system that is correct for the size of the child: a front-facing car seat, a booster seat, or a lap / shoulder belt.  
• Never put a rear-facing infant in the front passenger seat of a vehicle with an active passenger-side airbag.

Used child safety seats can be used if properly checked for defects or damage.   You must check the following: 

• Has the seat been in a crash? Does it have any damage? If so it cannot be used.
• Is it a real car seat? (Yes, there are fakes out there.) Be sure it has all parts, an owner’s manual, proper stickers and identification.
• Has there been a recall for the car seat? You will need the model number and date of manufacture for this. You can find recall information by calling the NHTSA Auto Safety Hotline at 800-424-9393.
• What is the age of the car seat? All child safety seats have an expiration date. Locate the date and check the seat.

 When in doubt, sign up to see a certified cars seat technician to aid you in your installation.

Yes, part of installation of a child car safety seat is making sure it properly fits the child as well. Unless you are an expecting parent getting prepared before baby comes, please do bring your child to the check event or appointment.

The Senior Citizen Snow Removal Program is a snow removal service provided at no cost to senior citizens (age 65 and older) or disabled residents whose annual household income is less than 300% of federal poverty guidelines. For those eligible, the City will contract to remove snow accumulations of two inches or more from public sidewalks adjacent to homes.

When it begins to snow, please remove all vehicles from the street. If snow is predicted to occur during evening hours, it would be wise to move your car off the street.

All vehicles must be moved off of any public streets, roads, and alleys within the city when a snow ordinance is declared. Parking in The District at Prairie Trail and Uptown business district is banned from 2 - 6 a.m. during snow ordinances. Vehicles parked on the street during a snow ordinance will be ticketed $40 and may be towed. The City can declare a snow ordinance based on several factors including snow, sleet, freezing rain, and blowing snow. The Division of Public Works and the Ankeny Police Department will coordinate the towing operation. If your car is towed, you may call the Police Department at 515-289-5240 to locate your vehicle.

Additional Suggestions

• Keep small children inside when snow removal equipment is in your neighborhood.
• Trim low-hanging branches above the street to prevent damage by snowplow trucks.
• Shovel the snow around the fire hydrant near your home for public safety.
• Shovel the snow around the catch basins in the street, so melting snow can drain away.
• Please do not plow or shovel snow into or across the street. It is against the City's Code of Ordinances to do so, and if the snow removal equipment doesn't get a chance to come back and remove it, the snow will most likely freeze and cause ice ruts. This could be hazardous for motorists and pedestrians.
• Do not pass a plow or sander and do not follow them closer than 50 feet.
• Please let us know of any treacherous conditions or problems encountered on the city streets.
• Please be patient. All the streets will be cleared and the problems will be responded to as quickly as possible.

During periods of excessive snow, homeowners may find snow piled into the sidewalk or into their yards. This is an unavoidable part of the snow removal process. Should residents have concerns about clearing their sidewalks, the City of Ankeny will not ticket property owners on cul-de-sacs with snow piled on their sidewalks when it is evident that Public Works has placed it there.

The snowplow operators make every effort to remove snow as close to the curb-line as practical to provide access to mailboxes for the U.S. Postal Service. The final cleaning adjacent to mailboxes is the responsibility of each resident.

The installation of mailboxes on city-owned right-of-way is permitted. The mailbox owner assumes all risks of damage, except when a mailbox is damaged through direct contact with snow removal equipment. 

If a mailbox is damaged due to direct contact with snow removal equipment, the City, at its option, will repair, replace or reimburse the property owner.

To notify the City of a damaged mailbox, please submit an online form at www.ankenyiowa.gov/mailbox. If the City of Ankeny hit your mailbox and it is unusable, we will loan you a temporary mailbox.

Most snowplow trucks will make 6 passes on residential streets and 10 passes on four-lane streets during a snow removal operation. This means driveways could be filled up to 3 times due to the trucks plowing the snow to the curb. The amount of snow deposited in the driveways may be significant, but it is unavoidable due to the nature of the snow removal process. The City will not clean driveways.

Complaints and requests for further services regarding snow and ice control or damages caused by city snow removal operations can be made to the Public Works Operations Manager at 515-963-3525. Response time for messages left should not exceed 24 hours after the snowfall has ceased unless conditions or operations prevent it. Concerns will be addressed on a priority basis.

If your car is towed, contact the Polk County Dispatch at 515-286-3333 to locate it.

A winter storm may start out with residential streets not being plowed, however, could easily progress to a longer duration or more intense weather event where residential streets do need to be plowed and then mid-event we would have to ask residents to move their vehicles.

All vehicles must be moved off of all public streets, alleys, and on-street parking within the City when a snow ordinance is declared. No parking is allowed until the snow ordinance is officially lifted by the City. Parking in The District at Prairie Trail and Uptown business district is prohibited from 2 - 6 a.m. during snow ordinances. The City can declare a snow ordinance based on several factors including snow, sleet, freezing rain, and blowing snow. When a snow ordinance is put into effect, the declaration will be communicated, along with the start and stop times for parking restrictions, via text message/email (sign up through Notify Me), the City website, and the City's Facebook page. Local media will also be notified.

It is not necessary to report vehicles left on the streets. Vehicles parked on the street during a snow ordinance will be ticketed $40 and may be towed. You may report a vehicle to the Ankeny Police Department by calling dispatch via the Polk County Sheriff's Office at 515-286-3333.

All residential housing in Ankeny is required to have a driveway or place to park (that is not in the street) based on Chapter 194 of the City Code. This includes rental units. Beyond what is outlined in the code, parking would need to be resolved by each individual property owner based on each unique property and number of vehicles. If you live in a rental unit and do not have adequate parking, we would advise you to contact your landlord. You can view details of Chapter 194 of the City Code.

Anti-Icing / De-Icing Operations

Public Works crews strategically apply salt brine or calcium chloride to arterial and major collector streets approximately 24 hours prior to the beginning of a snowfall event to prevent the formation or development of bonded snow and ice on the roadway. Arterial and major collector streets, industrial roads, and residential intersections are treated with a salt mixture for ice control and snow accumulations of one inch or less.

Things to Know About Ankeny Snow Removal Operations

• When snow accumulation occurs, plow trucks will make multiple passes to fully clear all streets. (We appreciate your patience.)
• Plow trucks are also used to apply salt (you may see a plow truck with its wings and plow up).
• Snow removal for cul-de-sacs:
  • Plow trucks will initially clear a path around the outside of the cul-de-sac.
  • Depending on the amount of accumulation, another truck or an end loader may arrive later to complete snow removal in the bulb of the cul-de-sac.
  • In the event of lighter snowfall, the center of the cul-de-sac may not be cleared.
  • When cul-de-sacs are cleared, the snow may be pushed up and over the sidewalk. (If this is necessary, the property owner is not expected to clear this piled snow off the sidewalk.)
• As the Public Works Department clears all city streets, residential neighborhoods, and business districts, Parks Maintenance removes snow from public parking lots, sidewalks, and trails.

If you are using water when the fire hydrant flushing process is occurring in your neighborhood, the water that we are scouring out of the water distribution system could be drawn into your home’s plumbing system. Although the water may be discolored, smell different and/or have a slightly different taste, it is safe to use.  If you experience discoloration of your water supply that doesn't clear after a few minutes of running water, please contact Municipal Utilities Customer Service at 515-963-3565. 

If water gets into your ice maker, there is a simple remedy; after the water returns to normal, discard the discolored ice and the new ice will be fine.

The water distribution system consists of hundreds of miles of water main and thousands of fire hydrants, and each of those hydrants needs to be operated periodically to lubricate the internal mechanisms and check the overall functionality. If a deficiency is discovered during this inspection, most maintenance can be performed immediately. The end result is that the fire hydrants in your neighborhood are available for fire protection if there is ever a need.

Water chemistry can be very complex. Temperature and time can change how water reacts with the water main. Water mains are made of many different materials including cast iron, ductile iron, concrete and polyvinylchloride (PVC). Flushing the water distribution system helps to remove sediment and deposits that may have attached to the walls of the mains or simply settled out of suspension. This is a standard procedure and the water is dechlorinated to protect the environment.

Instructor-led programs, golf simulator and leagues are an additional fee.

Seniors (60 plus) receive a discounted membership to the facility. Ankeny resident seniors receive a free membership. Non-Ankeny resident seniors can purchase a membership for $40 per year.

Programs specific to seniors will be offered throughout the week such as pickleball, fitness classes, bocce ball, shuffleboard, and more.

Yes, we have two rental spaces available in the facility. The large banquet room has seating for up to 155 people and is ideal for parties, weddings, banquets and other large events. The small classroom is ideal for meetings, presentations, classes and other small events and has seating for up to 30 people.

City Staff will assess the ongoing weather conditions and modify Community Center hours as needed. Closures and cancellations will be communicated to the public via the Ankeny Weather Hotline at 515-963-3575 (option 6).

If your home was permitted after Jan. 1, 2020, you are required to have a second meter. If your home was permitted prior to Jan. 1, 2020, you may remain on sewer averaging if you so choose. However, installing a second meter could benefit you in the long run, depending upon your usage during the averaging period and how your usage is during non-watering months.

Ankeny was one of only a few cities in the state not billing based on actual usage.

You will default to actual use billing; sewer averaging is not an option because the home's plumbing must have a place for a second water meter to be installed that would deduct non-sewer use.

If you plan to have outside water usage you have the option to install a second meter at your own expense and remain on actual billing. If this line will be used to water or establish turf or plantings, the City of Ankeny highly recommends that the secondary meter be installed. Your builder should be aware of this and if turf or plantings will be watered they should opt to install the second meter with the price of the home.

You may install a separate meter for outside water usage. Property owners would be responsible for the expense of plumbing work and the cost of the second meter.

You may remain on sewer averaging by either contacting customer service or filling out the online form stating your preference.

If you are using a septic system you will not be charged for any sewer usage as you would not have any.

An irrigation system is an integrated sprinkler system used to supply water to your lawn and home landscaping. A backflow prevention device is required for irrigation systems.

If you have your backflow tested each spring by a certified technician as required by State Law and City Code they report the results, making us aware of the system so it is “known”.  If this is the case, you will remain on average sewer based on your usage from your January, February, and March bills.

The cost of the second meter is $386. There is no charge for the city to install the second meter; we will just need an appointment to install the meter after the plumbing is ready. There will not be any additional monthly flat fee (availability charge) on the second meter.

If an incident occurs during normal business hours, Monday through Friday, 8 am to 5 pm, please contact the Utilities Department at 515-963-3520. If it is after business hours, contact Polk County Dispatch at 515-286-3333, option 5.

If water / sewage is coming up in your basement (or any other drain), City crews will be out to check the City's lines. If the City sewer is flowing freely, you may have a blockage in your service line. If that is the case, you will have to contact a plumber to have your service line unclogged.

Annual Dog Park passes can be purchased online. City of Ankeny does not sell day passes to the Dog Park. 

The City of Ankeny's Parks and Recreation Department maintains a Weather Cancellation Hotline at 515-963-3575 with the most recent information to alert program participants of program cancellations. Cancellations are also shared through the City's Facebook and Twitter accounts.

The City of Ankeny has adopted the International Fire Code which allows for recreational fires as long as the regulations are followed. A permit is not required for a recreational fire though is subject to and regulated by guidelines.

The City of Ankeny defines "recreational fire" as "an outdoor fire burning materials other than rubbish/refuse where fuel being burned is not contained in an incinerator, outdoor fireplace, barbeque grill or barbeque pit and has a total area of 3 feet or less in diameter and 2 feet or less in height for pleasure, religious, ceremonial, cooking, warmth or similar purposes."

Chapter 55, Section 5 of Ankeny's Municipal Code states " It is unlawful for a person to keep livestock within the City."

The City's Municipal Code defines livestock as any animal belonging to the bovine, caprine, equine, ovine or porcine species, ostriches, rheas and emus; farm deer as defined in Section 170.1 of the Code of Iowa; or poultry.

The reasons livestock is prohibited within City limits are multiple. They include a lack of code to establish zoning of coops next to residential units as well as noise and smell complaints from caged or penned animals.

The primary reason, however, is that there are no means to "police" livestock should they escape confinement.

The City of Ankeny does not have dedicated animal control officers. Rather, we are contracted with the Animal Rescue League of Iowa and they do not have the means to capture, house, or maintain stray livestock. There are also no means to license or register livestock to facilitate returning them to their rightful owners.

In accordance with Chapter 44, Section 5, Item 4 of the City's Municipal Code, construction noise is prohibited between the hours of 9 p.m. and 7 a.m. on weeknights and between the hours of 6 p.m. and 9 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

To report a violation of the noise ordinance, please contact the Ankeny Police Department's non-emergency number at 515-286-3333. Reports can be filed anonymously.

Temporary signs cannot be placed in the public right-of-way - the grassy area between the street and sidewalk.

Garage sale signs are limited to a maximum of three days in advance of each sale. Signs may be placed within 1/2 mile of the garage sale location, but not within 300 feet of a major arterial intersection.

Political signs must be removed 10 days after the election for which they were applicable.

Signs that are not removed within the time limit, or after notice has been given from the City, will be removed with the cost of removal charged to the person named on the sign.

The City Clerk's office maintains an updated list of solicitors who are licensed to operate within Ankeny city limits.

All solicitors who operate within Ankeny City Limits must keep their license in their possession at all times and be able to produce the license upon request of the customer as evidence of compliance with the City's Municipal Code, Chapter 132.

Visit our online catalog and log in using your library card number and PIN. By default, your PIN is the last four digits of the phone number on the account. While logged in, you can put items on hold, renew your items, and more.

Most items check out for three (3) weeks. Projectors, and DVDs/Blu-Rays check out for one (1) week, while STEAM kits and TV series check out for 2 weeks.

You can check out a total of 100 items per card at one time. There is a limit of 10 music CDs and 10 DVDs per card.

Items that are returned late will be charged an overdue fine per the library's Fines and Fees Policy.

You can request that the library purchases or borrows a title not in the collection using this form. It can take several weeks before an item is available at the library; you will receive a notification when it is ready for you to pick up.

Items can always be returned to our outside book drop, located on the parking lot side of the building. During library hours, there is also a return between the north doors by the parking lot, and at the circulation desk.

The City of Ankeny offers free mulch and compost to Ankeny residents and businesses during the spring and summertime.

The mulch and compost are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week outside the fence of the City Maintenance Facility, located at 211 SE Lorenz Drive.

The mulch comes from wood and yard clippings that are dropped off and chipped during the City's tree and branch recycling events. The mulch is rough and has not been dyed; however, it is still effective at retaining moisture and preventing weeds around trees and plantings.

The compost is made from the wood chips and leaves the City collects during leaf collection days in the fall. The City periodically turns the compost pile with heavy equipment. The natural organic processes raise the temperature of the material but we do not add any artificial heat or cook the compost.

Check the lid on your cart for the pickup schedule in your area, and be sure to set your cart out by 7 a.m.

Groups of five at Otter Creek Golf Course is not allowed due to the delay in the pace of play that they cause.

Every golfer at Otter Creek will need to have their own set of clubs. Sharing of clubs is not permitted. High quality rental clubs are available for rent at the golf shop.

Otter Creek Golf Course offers senior rates to patrons 55 years and older.

The facility was originally opened in 1982. The renovated Otter Creek opened June, 2009.

Patrons will be able to purchase alcohol beverages both from the bar and beverage carts on the course. Individuals are not allowed to bring beverages onto the course from an outside source.

You must be 18 years old and have a valid drivers license to rent a riding cart at Otter Creek. No more that 2 riders and 2 bags of clubs are permitted on a cart at one time. For your safety, please keep both hands and feet inside the cart at all times.

Otter Creek does not allow outside carts to be brought on to the course. Our carts are protected from entering certain areas such as neighboring yards, and we can't allow cart without those restrictions on our property.

Otter Creek Golf Course is open seven days a week. During the spring and fall the course opens at 7 am. In the summer, we open at 6:30 am. The course closes at sundown during the golf season.

The practice range is closed Tuesday mornings until noon for maintenance.

To cancel a tee time reservation, please call 515-965-6464 at least 24 hours in advance. This will give others an opportunity to book that time.

Otter Creek Golf Course requires both men and women to wear appropriate golf attire that include casual pants, walking-length shorts, shirts with collars or mock neck shirts.

Otter Creek is a soft spike only facility. Metal spikes of any kind are prohibited.

Otter Creek houses a double-ended driving range and practice facility, fully stocked pro shop, conference/outing/wedding room available for rent, and the Tin Cup Bar and Grille.

The city-wide mosquito spraying program was suspended in 2011, due largely to the program's high cost and general ineffectiveness in widespread areas.

Mowing season for City of Ankeny properties typically begins in April and lasts through November. City properties are mowed every ten days, weather dependent.

Water and sewer utility bills can be paid online with a debit card, a credit card or by electronic check.  The ability to pay other city bills online is being considered for the future.

No, you may remain on sewer averaging if you so choose.  However, installing a second meter could benefit you in the long run, depending upon your usage during the averaging period and how your usage is during non-watering months.

If your vehicle was impounded by the Ankeny Police Department, you need to obtain an impound release in person from the department at Ankeny Police Headquarters, 411 SW Ordnance Road during regular business hours, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Fines are charged for all items returned after closing on the due date and for each day thereafter that the library is open.

Borrowing privileges are suspended whenever unpaid fines or other charges total more than $5.

For Blu-Rays and DVDs, the library charges 50 cents for each day past due. For other items, the library charges 20 cents for each day past due.

The signal at the High Trestle Trail crossing at West 1st Street is called a HAWK pedestrian Signal.

"HAWK" stands for High-intensity Activated crosswalk. It is intended to provide a signalized crossing for pedestrians while reducing delay to vehicular traffic.

While it looks similar to a traditional pedestrian signal, the HAWK operates a little differently. When not in use, vehicle signals remain dark, allowing vehicular traffic to proceed without stopping. A pedestrian pushing the button begins a sequence of four different light combinations:

1. First, the signal begins flashing yellow to indicate to drivers that a pedestrian is waiting to enter the crosswalk.
2. This is followed by a steady yellow indication, advising drivers to stop, if safe to do so (just like a traditional traffic signal).
3. The signal then turns solid red, requiring drivers to stop at the stop bar.
4. Finally, the signal will flash red indicating that drivers must stop first, but may proceed with caution if the street is clear - the same as they would at a traditional signal operating with flashing red lights. The signal will then return to dark.

During these sequences the pedestrians will see the same indications they see at a traditional traffic signal: Hand symbol (Don't Walk), Walking Person symbol (Walk), and Flashing Hand symbol with countdown timer. A winter storm may start out with residential streets not being plowed, however, could easily progress to a longer duration or more intense weather event where residential streets do need to be plowed and then mid-event we would have to ask residents to move their vehicles.

If you have a downed tree, branches or debris in your yard after a storm event, watch the City of Ankeny's website, Twitter or Facebook accounts, or call City Hall at 515-965-6400 to see if the City is going to provide a storm debris cleanup program. The decision to pick up fallen branches/debris from a storm is determined by the City Manager based on the severity of the storm and the extent of the damage.

If a city-wide pickup is not announced, your garbage hauler will collect yard waste in bags or bundles. Contact your hauler for more information.

The City of Ankeny's Utility Billing is a function of the Finance Department, while working closely with the Public Works Department. They provide billing, payment processing, collection and customer service for all water and wastewater needs.

If there is a sinkhole in your yard, the City of Ankeny will need to determine the cause. Sometimes the cause is settling, other times it might be related to a storm sewer or sanitary sewer pipes or manhole / intake structures.

If it is determined the cause of the sinkhole is one of the public sewer systems, the City of Ankeny will repair the sewer, fill the hole, and re-seed the area. If the sinkhole is on public property but is not caused by the public sewer system, City crews will fill the hole and re-seed the area.

If the sinkhole is not caused by the public sewer system and is on private property, it is the property owner's responsibility to fill the hole.

If you have not been irrigating, or knowing have not been using water more than normal, you may have a leak. Toilets are the most common culprit, often with leaks you cannot see or hear. To check your toilet, put some food coloring in the tank of the toilet and wait about 20 minutes. If the water in the bowl changes color, then the toilet is leaking - mostly likely the flapper isn't sealing.

You can also read your meter. You may have to shine a flashlight on it to "wake it up." There is a little red dial or triangle - if you are not using any water anywhere the dial should not be moving. If the dial is moving, then water is being used somewhere as water is going through the meter. You can take periodic readings from the meter to determine if or when the meter is showing usage to aid you in finding the extra usage.

Just like other utility companies, MetroNet has the right to access the city's right-of-way, which extends across streets from sidewalk to sidewalk, and easement areas, typically located along the street, the sidewalk, the rear lot line, or between two lots. Utility companies use easements to construct and maintain overhead and underground lines. MetroNet crews have legal access to these areas to install their fiber cables, in addition to equipment such as boxes buried at ground level, typically placing them in a central location utilized by multiple utility providers. If your easement is within a fenced area of your property, MetroNet will need access to this area as well. The construction phase of this project is temporary, and MetroNet crews do their best to minimize the impact to property; however, technicians do need to either hang fiber-optic cables on utility poles or run them underground in order to extend service to subscribing residents. Please do not remove the flags. MetroNet is legally required to have utilities locate their underground transmission line, such as gas, water, and electric lines prior to construction. The flags show where the existing utilities are, helping MetroNet crews avoid these areas. Once these colorful flags or temporary landscape-safe spray paint appear in your yard, or along the street, construction should begin within a week. Once construction is complete, the flags will be removed. Weather permitting, MetroNet will rake, seed, and straw your lawn in the areas where digging occurred.

MetroNet is creating a fiber network throughout the city, so people who want to sign up for service may do so. As with other utilities, the goal is to make it as widely accessible as possible, although there is obviously no requirement for any home sign up for service.

MetroNet workers may be in your yard from 30 minutes up to one day. If other utilities are overhead, MetroNet will install the fiber optic cables on existing poles. If utilities are underground, MetroNet will bury the network in those same areas. Before doing underground work, MetroNet will have the other utility companies locate their transmission lines and will temporarily move any obstacles within the utility easement.

Utility easements are located on most properties and are designated by city ordinance to be accessible to utilities, such as gas, water, electric, and cable providers. MetroNet signed a franchise agreement with the city of Ankeny to locate its fiber-optic network in these utility easements. Chlorine burns the gills and fins of fish, destroys sensory organs, interferes with the ability of fish to find food and causes internal organ damage. If the receiving water contains decaying or organic matter (from decaying plants, algae and bacteria), chlorine can combine with the byproducts to form compounds called trihalomethanes, which are persistent in the aquatic environment and pose a health threat to living things for a long time.

Copper is found in pipes and used as an algaecide in swimming pools. It is a pollutant that directly threatens aquatic life. Excess copper in water causes the formation of acid pH levels, burns the gills of fish, interferes with respiration and causes internal organ damage.
